In April 1961, there took place what The Bung referred to as an ‘unfortunate episode’, where Jailhouse Rock, was requested and played by Radio Luxembourg. |
How The Times saw it |
A group of boarders sent the request in to Radio Luxembourg and Jailhouse Rock was duly played on Saturday morning. Freddie Freeborough heard it and thought it was funny. He mentioned it in the staff room and the news filtered back to The Bung who was not amused. He picked on two boys, Gerard Kennedy and another, and expelled them. When the press got the story, he claimed that they had not been expelled but "their parents had been asked to withdraw them." When the parents refused to withdraw them, he was obliged to take them back. |
