Joe’s Old Boy,
Councillor Norman Hardy, was appointed Blackpool’s first citizen after
over fifty years’ service to the town. Norman left Joe’s in 1951 and joined
Blackpool’s Town Hall administration as a junior clerk in 1955. He devoted
his working life in service of Blackpool Town Council.
Norman retired in 1990, and in 1991 was elected as Councillor for the Hawes
Side District of Blackpool. He has served on the Council for 18 continuous
years, and was inaugurated as mayor at a Town Hall ceremony on 11th May, his
74th birthday, together with his wife, Barbara who was installed as mayoress.
He declared that being elected mayor was like winning a World Cup medal or
winning an Oscar.
His Mayoral charities were Breathe Easy, a support group network which
provides support for people living with a lung condition, Second Skin, a
medical charity, and Mencap.
